Introduction to the Family Attic

We know ourselves by where we have been...

As the years pile up behind me I whine a bit about forgetfulness - not being able to retrieve a name, going down to the workshop for something and ending up staring at the wall trying to recall what the hell I went down there for.

But imagine not having any memory at all. How would you know who you were? How could you create? There would be no ideas, no plans, no solutions, since there would be no springboard for them. A fine artist has said that you can't photograph anything you don't already carry inside you.

So we know ourselves and react to the world in terms of where we have been, what we carry inside us; out memories and our heritage. The purpose of this attic is to help keep us in touch with that heritage by collecting and sharing some of the important objects and stories from our past, so that we may know where we came from and thus gain a reference for where we are going.

The idea for the attic came through conversations with Marty and George Mindling, and the realization that just between us we had a collection of some major family pieces, which none of us had previously been aware of. And so this little beginning is presented in the hope that others in the family will find and enjoy it.

Contributions, comments and suggestions are most welcome. Do you have a photograph of an object, perhaps with some background to go with it? A copy of a fine family photograph, letter, or other document? Just crank up the old email - I'd love to hear from you.
