Notes

The Mindling family of Washington County, Ohio traces it's ancestry to Gottfried Mendling[1] who was born at nine in the morning in Schwaigern, Germany, on May 10, 1808. He was one of four children born to Eberhardt Mendling[2] and Dorothea Kaufmanin. Gottfried married Wilhelmina Karoline Frank in April of 1834. She died just two months later.

In January, 1834, Gottfried married his second wife, Christina Satzler. She was 22, he was 26. During the next 11 years they had six children, three of whom reached adulthood. In 1847 Gottfried and Christina, and their children Rosine, Heinrich, and Mari Dorothea sailed for America on the "Goldene Dame", probably from a French port[3]. They were accompanied by Christina's two sisters, Elizabeth Satzler and Hannah Satzler Leibrand with her husband and family. The voyage took 53 days. As they neared New York harbor a storm blew the ship back to sea for another ten days. During this time a shipmate took advantage of their seasickness to steal their savings. As a result they had to change their plans for purchasing land in northern Ohio and settle in the less fertile southern part of the state.

They settled in Washington County on July 4, 1847, on a farm about 1.5 miles southwest of St. John Lutheran Church. Within a few months, Nicholas was born, to be followed by Hiram, Jacob, and Albert (who died at the age of three). On December 31, 1853, Gottfried, then 45, severed an artery while working with his grape vines. Blood poisoning developed in a few days, and he died within a month. Christina spent these last tragic hours in labor, giving birth to a child 11 hours after his death. This child died, leaving the 40 year old woman with a family of six children ranging in age from 17 year old Rosine to two year old Jacob, and a young farm in a new country.

Christina lived until 1905, and it was from this sturdy woman that early information about the family was gathered by her descendants.
_______________

[1] This spelling is from Charles Mindling's letter of February 10, 1958. Charles and his wife Maxine visited Schwaigern and it's Lutheran Church in 1957 and collected information from church records with the help of an interpreter of medieval script. In his letter Charles stated that before they immigrated to the United States, the Mindlings spelled their name "Mendling".

[2] Eberhardt was born December 22, 1743. He married Dorothea, his second wife, on August 12, 1804. He had eight children, only three of which reached adulthood. Gottfried was born when Eberhardt was 65, and Dorothea was 32.

[3] This information is from Charles Mindling's letter. He credits cousins Lizzie and Oscar with details. Information on the ship crossing was obtained from Emma Mindling Meyers and from a letter written by Henry Mindling to Charles' grandmother, Osie.
