Notes

Mabel Metze[1] is a native of Ohio, and without question the star pupil and educator of the family. She was valedictorian at her high school graduation in Lowell, Ohio in 1924, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bethany College, Bethany West Virginia in 1928. After teaching high school at Lowell for a few years, she continued her education at Boston University, obtaining an M.A. in 1932. During the next eleven years she taught high school in Bennington, New Hampshire, Toronto, Ohio, and Hagerstown Maryland. Later she was director of children's work for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Chesapeake Area. In 1948 she came to the staff of the United Christian Missionary Society as Director of childrens work field program in the Department of Christian Education. Later her work was in the field of educational administration where she developed manuals for education departments in local churches.

In 1960 she obtained the Master of Divinity Degree at Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Magna Cum Laude. She visited churches in Asia in 1958, travelling toto Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Nepal, Ussr, Finland, Sweden, and Norway. While conducting a work and study tour for professional church educators to mission areas in the Caribbean in 1963, she visited Puerto Rico, Santo Domingo, and Jamaica. She first went to the Philippines in June of 1968 to teach at Ellinwood Colege and Philippine Christian College, where she was active on the faculty development committee and committee on religeous activities.

She began teaching part time at Union Theological Seminary at Manila in 1971-72, and became a full time faculty member there in 1973-74, where she taught in the department of local church ministries. Travels during this period took her to Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, India, Rome, Geneva, Amsterdam, and London. In 1975-76, having "retired" and returned from the Philippines, she served as administrative secretary for the Asian-American Consultation of the Christian Church (Disciples), sponsored by the Division of Overseas Ministries. Other activities since retirement have included teaching, committee service, a term as elder, and various volunteer positions, as well as continuing to travel throughout the world. Moving into her eighties, she was still caring for others, by helping two ladies in their 90's with their Medicare paperwork.
