Notes

Uncle Carl[1], the youngest of the family, came to Indianna and was a single young man living with my parents about the time I was born. He also worked as a telegraph operator. Uncle Carl and my father worked at the same tower on different shifts on the Pennsylvannia Railroad for many years. After we moved to Washington Uncle Carl was drafted into the army during World War I not long before the war ended, and as a result he never saw oversees action of any kind.

He married Opel Cloyd who came from Indianna. They lived in Washington with us for a while after he was discharged from the army, and I recall that he got a job as a motorman on a street car. At that time you saw a lot of men still wearing their uniforms acting as motormen or conductors on street cars. He shortly went back to work as a telegraph operator on the Michigan Central Railroad in Detroit. They iived in Detroit for many years, until they retired and moved to San Jose, California to be with their oldest sone, Rodney Mindling. They had two sons, Rodney and Dwight. Rodney still lives in the San Jose, California area. He owns a tool supply business, from which he is now semi-retired. Dwight died in 1976 suddenly of cancer.
