Notes
George Mindling was born in the log house on the Nicholas Mindling
farm near Waterford, Ohio. He graduated from Waterford High School in
1898, and taught for a year in a country elementary school before
continuing his education at Marietta College. Following his graduation
in 1903, he taught high school for a few years, then in 1907 began a
43 year career with the United States Weather Bureau. During his
career he held positions in Ithaca NY, Philadelphia PA, Winnemucca,
NV, Portland Maine, Boston, Atlanta, and Columbus, OH. He was the
author of a book, "Weather Headlines in Ohio" for which he received a
special promotion. He also wrote poetry, and was an avid cyclist:
MY HERCULES, a bike made in England
I long not for the scenes of Lake Louise
Nor Yellowstone and canyons of the West.
I'd rather ride my bike, my Hercules,
And be at home each night where rest is best.
Let others drive their cars to distant states
Or fly across the wide and stormy seas.
I leave them all to their uncertain fates;
I'm safer on my Hercules.
I do not ride on busy thoroughfares;
The county roads present much finer scenes.
I like their dips and curves and chipmunk lairs
Their wooded borders and lowland greens.
I do not need to purchase gasoline,
Nor wonder where I'll find a place to park.
With ease my feet propel this light machine
And bring me home again before it's dark.
To points of local fame my way I make,
Some places over which the people rave
Like Hoover Brother's Dam and Olentangy Cave.
Five counties I have traversed on this bike,
On many days gone fifty miles ot more.
For my retirement this is what I like,
Though three years more and I will reach fourscore.
So let me fully realize this mode
Of finding pleasure in the hills and trees
Of Blendon Woods and Cherry Bottom Road
And other places on my Hercules.
